OUTDOOR CHEF KURT went to HOMER ALASKA the HALIBUT CAPITOL OF THE WORLD to fill up his fish box for home after 6 weeks in the bush at TALAVIEW LODGE.
My brother and a friend Rick flew to ANCHORAGE to meet me and we rented a motor home for a couple days to get some BUTTS.
We had a charter reserved out of NINILCHICK which was on the way to HOMER.
We caught a limit of smaller halibut and a lot of sharks which had taken over the halibuts areas for some reason.
The next morning was the last day of the season and the weather was supposed to be nasty so our charter canceled. We jumped in the motor home and headed for HOMER.
We managed to book an afternoon charter after a mad search across the harbor for room on a boat.It was raining hard and blowing when we left the harbor. After a one hour boat ride we anchored over a reef and got to fishing. The boat was full so we rotated like a long conga line from front to back .
The fish were smaller than we would have liked but we were glad to get what we did due to the conditions.A few cod were caught by other people but I guess I was doing something and I caught cod after cod after cod.I need one more halibut so I gave the rod to rick and he hooked a fish and it was a BUTT so I had my limit plus about a dozen tasty cod.
We were glad to end the season with a nice batch of fish and look forward to the BIG ONE next time.
